Snoozing on the sofa . . .
Chasing squirrels . . .
Or digging a new tunnel to China . . .
They continue to surprise us and delight us
And make us laugh.
Cairns are gifted with the attributes we Humans wish for
and long for throughout our life. Cairns are self-assured and loyal companions. They are in all respects friendly and independent, humorous and affectionate, intelligent and spirited, courageous and blatantly tenacious,
the list of their endearing traits does go on and on.
Our four legged companions give good measure of the personalities
we aspire to possess.
Some fourteen years ago a dear friend encouraged me to take charge
of a Cairn male pup she had bred.
She felt he would be the perfect companion for my son then 10 years of age.
After little consideration of her offer, my answer was
“No thank you, with all the sports my son plays and our community involvement
a dog is quite out of the question.
Anyway, I have oriental rugs.”
Believing my rugs could not survive the training of a young wild terrier pup, I was sure I had made the responsible decision.
Feeling confident, I would survive the raising of my young wild human boy.
But fortunately, upon yielding to persistent and, I concede, persuading arguments from the male members of my family “I Caved” as they say.
Now, you are privy to a family secret.
My son occasionally reflects and I quote,
“Mom did not even want one little pup and now how many Cairns does she own?”
Well, I must refrain from answering that question because the number is forever changing but I will confess it is a number larger than one.
Yes, we have all survived, even the rugs, and never once have I looked back without fond memories and a smile.
I am grateful for that friend who shared a Cairn pup.
I am glad I yielded to the persistent persuasion from my family.
But I find that the greatest gift is that I have shared my life with a companion
capable of inspiring me to claim within myself the
oh so natural attributes found in a now fourteen year old Cairn Terrier
known as MacLeod.
Here at Cairnoch we aspire to breed, show and raise Cairns
that are sound and healthy. We test and participate in university studies.
We breed for temperaments that are friendly and affectionate, courageous as well as mischievous. We encourage their natural instincts to chase and hunt vermin.
We breed focusing on physical correctness
encompassing structure, movement and size,
attributes set forth to us by the American Breed Standard, thus, allowing us
to protect and
continue to embrace this breed
with the enthusiastic vigor of the terrier spirit.
